This week I have Spoken in the house on various matters including the need to protect our veterans from historic litigation when they return from active service. It is just not right that when service personnel return home from active service keeping us safe, that they should be able to be subjected to this kind of legal attack.
I was also pleased to see that The Chancellor has announced more plans to support workers and businesses through the covid recovery. Having spoken to many constituents about how the crisis has been affecting them I know that these new support measures will go a long way to providing the helping hand back to a more normal way of work and life.
Following on from my calls to all Headteachers in the constituency last week I have taken action on their thoughts and concerns by writing to the Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson to ensure that those common issues are raised at the highest levels of Parliament.
Also this week, I shared the concerns of local people, about the new measures and resrtictions to help deal with coronavirus, with the Prime Minister. I asked that every effort be made to ensure that these could be lifted as soon as possible. He gave me that reassurance. Did you have a chance to complete my survey on the BBC and the licence fee yet? Lots of constituents have and thank you to them for the constructive feedback that they have provided. I know that this is an important issue for a lot of people so I really want to know your thoughts on the subject so that I can share them with my Westminster colleagues.
On Saturday I visited Heywood Market where I met some of the new traders who are helping to keep this valuable local asset thriving. It was so good to see that despite the difficult trading conditions the market was still going strong, with many traders having taken advantage of the Government's business support initiatives. It was also incredible to see that a number of businesses have started up in the last few weeks, it was great to meet these new stallholders and hear their individual stories. The Management Team have done a great job of making the whole market covid-safe and you can really see the lift that these new stall have given to the market. When I was there the were lots of people in and shopping and I would encourage everyone to do the same - because we all know that if you don't use it you could lose it.
Today I should have been opening the new socially distanced beer garden at the Old Queen Anne in Heywood, but unfortunately due to restrictions, this was not able to go ahead. Nicola, Craig, and all the team have worked their socks off to make the pub and garden super safe and still very friendly so well worth popping in if you are looking for a quiet pint in safe pleasant surroundings.
